Harpenden, a Town in the District of St Albans in the English County of Hertfordshire
The commuter town of Harpenden is a town in the district of St Albans in the English county of Hertfordshire. It has a direct rail connection with Central London, and property prices in this town are more than double the country’s average. It is located in the city of St Albans in the south and Luton to the north and bordered by Wheathampstead to the east and Redbourn to the west.
The oldest church in town is the church of St Nicholas originally constructed as a Chapel of ease in 1217. But the advent of the railways and the sale of farms for housing development completely changed the town’s environs.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Harpenden
The tree-lined high street of the town has some pubs and restaurants, although there are also eating places scattered around the other streets of Harpenden such as in Station Road, The town boasts of over sixty places to eat serving some of the best food and drink in this area. There are also independent shops sitting side by side with the restaurants and pubs along the high street as well as in the others streets of the town, and there is a farmers market on the 4th Sunday of the month. There are no hotels in Harpenden, but there are three B&Bs.
Things to See and Do in Harpenden
Further down the southern edge of the town is the Nomansland Commons, a historically relevant area of this town. Part of the 2nd Battle of St Albans during the Wars of the Roses was fought there. The first annual steeplechase race in England happened here in 1830 as well as the last match of Simon Byrne, the 19th Century bare-knuckle fighter. And this is also where the “Wicked Lady,” Lady Katherine Ferrers hang out. This is also where the Common Golf Club is.
