Earls Colne, a Village Named After the River Colne and the Earls of Oxford in the English County of Essex
The village of Earls Colne in the Essex County England is named after the River Colne as well as the Earl of Oxford. The River Colne is where the village stands while the Earl of Oxford owned the manor from 108 to 1703.
The Industrial and Co-operative Society called the Earls Colne Co-op founded in 1884 is essential to the late 19th and early 20th Century life in the village. It was one of the last surviving independent village co-ops in Suffolk and Essex but had to finally merge with the bigger co-op societies in East Essex and Colchester in 1970.
