Bungay, a Market Town and an Electoral Ward in the Waveney Valley in the English County of Suffolk
The market town of Bungay located in the Waveney Valley in Suffolk county, England is also an electoral ward. It lies 5.5 miles west of Beccles on the perimeter of The Broad, and at the neck of a meander of the River Waveney.
The town’s name is believed to have been taken from Bunincga-haye an Anglo-Saxon title which stands for the land belonging to the tribe of a Saxon chieftain named Bonna. Because of the land’s elevation where it is protected by the marshes and the River Waveney, the area has a strong defensive position. This characteristic of the area appealed to the early settlers, in fact, Roman artefacts have been discovered in the area.

Because this town is rich in historical attractions, a must do in this town is a visit to said attractions such as the ruins of Bigod’s Castle, the old Borough well, and the age-old Buttercross where there is a market held every Tuesday. Another must visit the historic Falcon Meadow, which lies between the village of Ditchingham in Norfolk and Bungay. This lovely water meadow presently provides the town’s only riverside green area with a public right of way. It is a beautiful place to just sit, fish, wildlife-watch, canoe and holds riverside activities.
