Included in the civil parish is the hamlet of Boume End which is situated north of the village. On the other hand, Wharley End, formerly a distinct community is now part of the north of the Village.
Cranfield village is located on higher ground and continues some distance along roads that radiate from the church, the Church of St Peter and Paul, set amidst a shady courtyard. When the church was being restored some years ago, Roman coins were unearthed in the churchyard. The church has records dating back to 1600 and is well-known for its newly restored bells.
Today, the village has a university, located contiguous to the village, across the airfield which was formerly an RAF training airfield. The airfield was once used by the College of Aeronautics after the war, but these days the future of the airfield hangs in the balance after one runway was closed to give way to the Nissan building and technology park.
