Flitwick, a Small Town and Civil Parish in Bedfordshire County, England
The civil parish of Flitwick is a small town in Central Bedfordshire, England. It appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “a hamlet on the River Flint, ” while it was spelt as Flytwyk in 1381. River Flit flows through the Moor, a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest sitting between Flitwick and Greenfield. The town is 10 miles to Luton and also 10 miles away from Bedford, and shares a boundary as well as various amenities and services with its neighbour, Ampthill.
Recently, the town has experienced a considerable population expansion, However, the town’s retail facilities have not kept pace with the progress. In response, the local council came up with a redevelopment plan to upgrade the retail offering. Presently, an open air market is held every Friday at the car park of the village hall where bakers, fishmongers, haberdashers, and fresh produce growers ply their trade. There is also a Co-op which supplies the community’s food needs, a Barclays Bank, a Tesco, estate agents, and several smaller shops many of which are located near the railway station.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Flitwick
Four pubs serve the town; these are; the Blackbirds, the Bumble Bee and the Swan. An Indian Restaurant called the Indian Lodge now occupies the site of a pub called the Wheatsheaf or Crown. The Flitwick Club, a members-only social club, is located on the High Street across the Drivestyle yard. There is only one hotel in town, the Hallmark Hotel Manor.
Things to See and Do
Places of interest in and around the town include the Center Parcs Woburn Forest located just outside of town. It is the latest holiday village of Center Parcs UK which opened in July 2014. The Manor House which is now a hotel and restaurant is also quite famous. And there is also “The Mount” the remains of a motte and bailey castle from the Norman era.
