Chalfont St Peter, a Civil Parish and Village in the Chiltern District of the English County of Buckinghamshire
Chalfont St Peter, one of the largest villages in the UK, is a civil parish and village in the Chiltern district of south-east Buckinghamshire, England. It lies between Rickmansworth and High Wycombe and close to Central London and Heathrow Airport, as well as Elstree and Pinewood Studios. The village is one of the three villages comprising The Chalfonts. However, the Office for National Statistics considers Chalfont St Peter and Gerrards Cross, another town in the county, as a single area for population count purposes. At one time Gerrard Cross was only a hamlet of this village. Now, it is a separate village and civil parish.
The other two components of The Chalfonts are Little Chalfont and Chalfont St Giles. IN the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 949, no distinction was made of the three Chalfont villages. All three were referred to as Ceadeles funtan, the Anglo-Saxon word for “Caedele’s Fountain.” It was in the year 1237 when the three villages were separated when in the manorial record, Chalfont St Peter was mentioned as Chalfund Sancti Petri.
