Food, Shopping and Accommodation in South Woodham Ferrers
At present, there are around 100 establishments in the town centre, 45% of which are retail businesses while the rest are a mix of dining enterprises such as restaurants, inns and cafes and professional services such as estate agents, banks and the like.
A major development partner of South Woodham Ferrers for the town centre is Asda, the supermarket chain. In late 1978, Asda opened a store in town, and this made them the principal business establishment in town. After the Essex County Council sold a huge part of the town to Asda, in 2001, the supermarket chain also sold a parcel of that land to SW Investments. These resulted in Asda owning Queen Elizabeth I Square, the town’s car parks and about one-third of the town centre’s commercial premises. On the other hand, SW Investments is the owner of most of what is left of the town centre including the Market Square, and the rest is owned by several private owners.
