South Benfleet, a Town in the District of Castle Point in the English County of Essex
The Town of South Benfleet is in the Castle Point district in the English County of Essex which is 30 miles east of London. The battle between the Saxons and the Vikings in 894 called the Battle of Benfleet took place in this town. It is located north of Canvey Island.
During the Roman times, Canvey Island, which used to be a reclaimed area, was connected to the mainland by a road that provided access to London( Londinium) and Colchester (Camulodunum) from Benfleet at low tides. The original Roman road is followed by the A130 going to Canvey Island from the Sadlers Farm junction. The construction of the A130 exposed several artefacts coming from the earlier settlements in the district.
