Manningtree, a Civil Parish and Town in the Tendring District of Essex County, England
The town of Manningtree is also a civil parish in the Trending district of the English county of Essex. It is next to the developed areas of Mistley to the east and Lawford to the west. The combined three parishes are occasionally called “Manningtree.”It skirts River Strout on Holbrook Bay in the north of Essex and is the easternmost part of Dedham Vale. It claims to be the smallest town in England.
Food, Shopping and accommodation in Manningtree
Many of the shops and other commercial establishments in this town cluster along the town’s high street. Since it is a small town, it does not offer much shopping experience. Surprisingly, such a small town can sustain sixteen eating and dining establishments with menus that range from British fare, Italian, Asian and more. As to guest accommodations, there is only one hotel in Manningtree but there are four B&Bs/inns, and one specialty lodging called the Strangers Home and Camping Site.
Things to See and Do in Manningtree
It is regrettable that several buildings in the town centre have obscured their ancient origins with a Georgian facade. Famous buildings are the town library and the Methodist church located on South Street. The building where the town library is housed presently was built as a public hall to serve as a corn exchange and around 1900, was used for public entertainment.
The Methodist church, on the other hand, is said to be the oldest in Essex. The Ascension, an 1821 work of John Constable, the English romantic painter, used to be the altarpiece of the 17th Century church on the town’s High Street that was demolished in 1967. At present, it hangs in Dedham church.
