Barnsley, a Civil Parish and Village in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, England
Barnsley lies in the north-east of Cirencester, in the Cotswold District English County of Gloucestershire 80 miles west of London. It is both a village and a civil parish in the county. The village’s history dates back to the Iron Age settlement in Barnsley Park. After the Roman invasion in AD360, a Roman Villa was constructed on the settlement. After Cirencester was captured in 577, however, Bearmodesiea or Bearmod’s glade, a Saxon village, was created at the site.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Barnsley
The village has an accredited hotel, a pub, a church and a festival. The hotel is the luxury hotel House Hotel. It was once a residence and was built in 1667 by Brereton Bouchier. The hotel now has a beautiful garden designed by another former owner, Rosemarie Verey. The pub is called the Village Pub; two minutes walk from the House Hotel.
Things to See and Do in Barnsley
One place of interest in this town is the church. It is the Church of St Mary located almost across the Village Pub in the very centre of the village. It’s a medieval structure that dates back to the early Norman era. The festival is the Village Garden Festival which will be celebrating its 29th anniversary in May 2017.
People also flock to the town to take part in the annual Village Garden Festival which was held on 20th of May this year. The aim of the festival is to provide the wider public with a chance to enjoy the village and the gardens in the village including the gardens of Barnsley House.
