ABOUT THE AREA

Redbourn a Civil Parish and Village along Watling Street in the English County of Hertfordshire.

The village and civil parish of Redbourn lie along Watling Street in the Hertfordshire County, England. It is three miles away from Harpenden, four miles from St Albans and five miles from Hemel Hempstead. The site of The Aubreys, an Iron Age hill fort, can be found south-west of the village a little after the motorway, while the location of a network of Roman temples can be found north of the village.

Some of the industries in this community as time passed by included farming, straw plait making and hat making, a watercress business, flour milling, and silk throwing. Russell Harborough, a local grocer, started a jam-making factory in the village but in 1956 it was purchased by Thomas Mercer Ltd. manufacturer of the marine chronometer. An industrial estate now occupies the site of the plant.

For serious shopping, residents of this town go to either St Albans or Harpenden. The town boasts of six places to dine and wine, and all six serve some of the best food from miles around. The Cricketers of Redbourn is a traditional pub that is the pride of the town. It does not only serve good food, but the ambience is also superb. The town prides itself of its Village Museum housed on the site of what was once a steam powered silk mill which also became the large Brooke Bond tea packing factory. The Museum which showcases the history of the village overlooks the Redbourn Common adjacent to the Cricketers Pub and set amidst a beautiful garden usually with outdoor exhibits.
