Markyate, a Civil Parish and a Village in North-West Hertfordshire, England
The civil parish and village of Markyate in the north-west of the English County of Hertfordshire are poised between the borders of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.At different times in history, the village has been part of these three counties. This village is adjacent to the source of the River Ver, the cause of occasional flooding in the village centre, yet the estuary is usually dry in some parts of the year.
The village used to be a major stopping point for coaches on the road from London to Birmingham because it lies on Watling Street, the Roman road between Dunstable and St Albans. There was a time when forty public houses and inns were lining the main street of the village. It is also one of the first station of the Pickford transport service, and in fact, one road of the village is named Pickford road.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Markyate
At present, there are only two remaining public houses in the village, The Swan and The Plume of Feathers. In the early 1970s, the White Hart ceased operation while The Red Lion also folded up at the later part of 2009. The Sun Inn also closed in 2014. White Hart and Red Lion both became private homes. The Swan, The Plume Feather, The White Hart, The Red Lion and the Sun Inn, all were already around during the stagecoach era. There are however three Indian restaurants, in this town.
