Watford, a Borough and a Town in the English County of Hertfordshire
Watford is both a town and a borough in Hertfordshire County, England 17 miles north-west of Central London. The town lies on the boundary of the Chiltern Hills on a rising ground to the east of the River Gade and the north of the River Colne.
The suffix of the town’s name came from a “ford” where the River Colne is traversed to the north-west by an old major road from London. Initially, there was a linear settlement near the crossing point.
For centuries, agriculture with a little cottage industry has been the main source of livelihood in this town. The Grand Union Canal was brought by the Industrial Revolution in 1798 and the London and Birmingham Railway in 1837. Both infrastructures had to locate in Watford in search of a smoother and easier gradient over the Chiltern Hills. The canal was able to carefully track down the River Gade because of landowning interests, but the railway was not that lucky.

The High Street is the main hub of activity at night since it is where most of the restaurants, clubs and bars are located. For shopping, there is the Intu Watford Shopping Centre, a huge purpose-built covered mall built in 1990 but renamed in 2013 with more than 140 establishments including cafes, restaurants and shops.
