Witham, a Town in the Braintree District in Essex County in the East of England
The town of Witham is in the district of Braintree in Essex County in the East of England. It lies between the town of Colchester and the city of Chelmsford with the Roman road between them. The River Brain traverses the town and meets with the River Blackwater just outside the town.
The name of the town is a mixed name, partly Brythonic, perhaps from a generic word Gwydd which is “woods” in modern Welsh and “ham”, a common Saxon suffix. This town was featured in the 1086 Domesday Book as a parish. In 1148 the Knights Templar was given the manor of Witham. Cressing Temple built more than 700 years ago is the bedrock of Templar lands in Britain. It is to the north of the current town. The life in the current town commenced on “Chipping Hill,” where the church and the old forge are still in existence up to now.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Witham
There is good shopping in the Town Centre at the Grove Shopping Centre. The Grove is home to twenty-six independent retailers and is anchored by a large Tesco store. The town also hosts more than fifty dining establishments, many of them clustered along Newland Street at the Town Centre. This town also has a hotel, one B&B and a camping ground in Bouncers Farm.
Things to See and Do in Witham
Although the town is off the beaten track for, still there are interesting places to see such as the beautiful St Nicolas parish church which dates back to the Templar days. The Witham War Memorial, the Whetmead Nature Reserves and the River Walk are for those who want to spend a quiet afternoon contemplating nature while taking a leisurely stroll.
