Kidlington, a Civil Parish and a Large Village in the Middle of the Oxford Canal and the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England
Kidlington is a civil parish and large village sitting between Oxford Canal and River Cherwell in the County of Oxfordshire, England. The village is 5 miles north of Oxford, and 7 ½ miles south-west of Bicester. The earliest settlement was somewhere around the parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. The area is now on the northern boundary of the present village which is quite near to the River Cherwell. Charming Georgian houses still exist in this part of the village. Close to the church, there is a 17th Century almshouse founded by a Royalist Commander during the Civil War in 1671.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Kidlington
The village has around 50 retail establishments, building societies and banks, a weekly market, a large village hall, and a public library. It also has four restaurants, two cafes and seven pubs. The pubs which are all lined along the A4260 road running through the village are the Highwayman Hotel, the Black Bull, the Black Horse, the King’s Arm, the Red Lion, the Six Bells and the Gurkha Village.
Things to See and Do in Kidlington
A place of interest in this village is the St Mary’s Church, believed to date back from 1220, with its beautiful medieval stained glass and 220-foot spire called “Our Lady’s Needle.” There are indications that there was a church built from AD 1073 on the very site where St Mary’s church is built. A causeway and a three-sided moat possibly of Roman origin have been discovered quite recently at the back of the church.
Canoeing and Kayaking along the canal are outdoor activities enjoyed in this town while the Willowbrook Farm, a working farm, is an ideal place to visit for families. The farm also makes available a camping site and camping facilities.
