Sudbury, an Ancient Market Town Known as a Suffolk Weaving Town located in the Stour Valley in the English County of Suffolk
Sudbury is a delightful ancient market town sitting near the River Stour in the English County of Suffolk on the border of Essex and Suffolk. It is surrounded by rolling hills and the water meadows immortalised in the works of Thomas Gainsborough, the famous English landscape painter. It is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Stour Valley and the commercial hub of the surrounding villages. The town is historically wealthy mainly because of its location – close to London & Colchester via domestic transport and close to the coast for the shipment of wool through the River Stour. The town is only fifteen miles away from Colchester with rail and good road links with the rest of the country, particularly London.

A famous destination in Sudbury is the art gallery and museum at the old house of famous English landscape painter, Thomas Gainsborough. A popular activity is a boat tour of the River Stour. The pride of the town is its architectural heritage, and this is what many visitors come to see. In Suffolk, there is a traditional mix of architecture- a combination of Victorian terraced houses, some picturesque timber-framed cloth merchant’s houses, Georgian manor, building or two from the Queen Anne era, a three storey 19th Century silk weaver’s cottage and three beautiful medieval churches.
