Wilton, A Town Rich in Heritage is a Typical Wiltshire Market Town
The rich heritage of the town of Wilton, a town in Wiltshire, England, dates back to the Anglo-Saxons with a history covering over 2,000 years. The name Wiltshire was derived from Wilton. This famous Wiltshire market town has been manufacturing carpets from as far back as the 18th century. It has not only lend its name to the county but also to the renowned to its signature Carpets which are still being produced in this town at present.
Wilton is strategically located at a critical point of southern Wiltshire’s river system so that it is easy to understand why it was chosen as the site of the settlement by the wanderers from the south who established the kingdom of Wessex about the middle of the 6th century.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Wilton
A great shopping experience awaits visitors at the Shopping Village, a shopping mall on Minster Street where chain stores, antique shops, independent retailers, restaurants and cafes and even a historic courtyard are found. A short distance away from the St Mary’s ruins and Market Square is the celebrated Italianate Church and the delightful footpath along the Wylye which meanders from St John’s Square all the way to the Flouse Hole Conservation then to Castle Meadow.
At the periphery of the town centre, there is the famous House with 21 acres of landscaped parkland complete with rose and water gardens sitting beside the River Nadder. The House is a restored English country house which used to be the country seat of the Earls of Pembroke for more than 400 years that has been converted into a hotel offering food and accommodation to guests.
