Crowthorne is a civil parish and village in the Bracknell Forest district of Berkshire, England. The village takes its name from the “Crow Thorne” that at one time was a landmark on the moors covering this part of the Windsor Forest. The parish is famous for Wellington College. Before this co-educational boarding school opened in 1859 and the opening of the Broadmoor Hospital in 1863, Crowthorne was just a tiny hamlet. The village owes its rapid development to these two institutions. In 1860, the opening of a railway station on the Reading to Guildford line also contributed to the growth of the area.
Wellington College was established as a national monument to honour the bravery of the Duke of Wellington in his military victories against the enemies in the Iberian Peninsula. The college’s mandate is to educate the orphaned sons of the officers of the British Army. At present, Wellington College is a public co-educational boarding and day school. The Broadmoor Hospital, on the other hand, is one of the three maximum-security psychiatric hospitals in Crowthorne.
