Woodley, A Suburb Of Reading And A Civil Parish And Town In Berkshire, England
Woodley is a civil parish and town in Berkshire, England and a suburb of Reading. The name of the town was taken from an old English word which means “a clearing in the woods.” In the past, it used to be part of the ecclesiastical parish of Sonning.
A century ago, Woodley was a small rural settlement with barely one thousand residents. Fifty years later, there was still not much change in the town. The opening of a Flying School in the early 30s in the 100 Acre Field of the Sandford Farm by Philips and Powis of Reading was the impetus to change that the town was waiting for. In 1932 F.G. Miles joined forces with Philips and Powis to produce the Miles Hawk, the well-known aircraft company, Miles Aircraft Ltd. is the progeny of the venture.
