Stony Stratford, A Constituent Town of Milton Keynes in the English County of Buckinghamshire
Stony Stratford is a constituent town of Milton Keynes and a civil parish within the Borough of Milton Keynes in the English County of Buckinghamshire. The name of the town is sometimes shortened to Stony. Its exact location is on the north-west side of Milton Keynes next to the border of Northamptonshire with only the River Great Ouse separating them. Before it was incorporated to the new town/city of Milton Keynes in 1967, it was part of the Wolverton Urban District of North Buckinghamshire.
The name of the town “Stratford” has an Anglo-Saxon origin which means “ford on a Roman road.” The Roman Road referred to is Watling Street that winds through the centre of the town, and the Ford is the River Ouse crossing. The prefix “Stony” pertains to the bed of stones of the ford. The prefix was added to make a distinction from Fenny Stratford, a town nearby.
