Things to See and Do in Great Dunmow
The Forgotten Gardens of Easton Lodge is one interesting place to visit in Great Dunmow. Its idyllic gardens designed by Harold Peto and commissioned by the Countess of Warwick are being restored to its former glory. Easton Lodge, a country house of the Maynard family, is along the boundary of this town. Frances Maynard, the most famous member of the family, became Countess of Warwick and said to be the mistress of King Edward VII. It is said that King Edward as Prince of Wales regularly visited the estate, travelling by train from London to Easton Lodge railway station. She is immortalised by her initials “CW” found in several properties in this town dating back to the Victorian era. The Countess of Warwick is known to be a magnanimous philanthropist in the locality.
A visit to the picturesque historic village of Thaxted is also a “must do” while in town.
