Earls Colne, a Village Named After the River Colne and the Earls of Oxford in the English County of Essex

The village of Earls Colne in the Essex County England is named after the River Colne as well as the Earl of Oxford. The River Colne is where the village stands while the Earl of Oxford owned the manor from 108 to 1703.

The Industrial and Co-operative Society called the Earls Colne Co-op founded in 1884 is essential to the late 19th and early 20th Century life in the village. It was one of the last surviving independent village co-ops in Suffolk and Essex but had to finally merge with the bigger co-op societies in East Essex and Colchester in 1970.

Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Earls Colne

Along the High Street is a minor shopping area with several shops and services which include a supermarket, a cafe, a library, a hardware store, butchers, antique shop, and more. Situated along the High Street are two of the four restaurants in this town, The Castle and The Lion, and one of its two hotels, The Drapers House Hotel.
