Tilbury, a Town in the Thurrock Borough in the English County of Essex
The town of Tilbury is in the Thurrock Borough in Essex County, England. The town was founded in the late 19th Century on land that was primarily part of Chadwell St Mary. The town has a vital deep-water port which is a significant contributor to the local economy. It also has an old cross-river ferry and a 16th-century fort.
The town sits on the north bank of the River Thames. The meandering of the river has caused its width to narrow to about 900 yards. At one time the area to the north was marshland, and on higher ground to the north of it are the villages of East and West Tilbury and Chadwell St Mary.

This town does not offer much when it comes to shopping. The nearest place for a serious retail therapy is Lakeside Shopping Centre in West Thurrock. But this town does not want when it comes to places to dine and wine. For such a small town, it has at least thirteen dining and wining establishment to be proud of. It’s a mix of restaurants, pubs, inns, and cafes and food offering range from British, Asian, Indian, Chinese and even African. This town also hosts quite a number of hotels, nineteen hotels are found in town.
Things to See and Do in Tilbury
The town’s principal landmarks are the Power Station, the cruise-ship landing stage and the docks. The Port of deals with an assortment of bulk cargo, cars, timber and container traffic just like Felixstowe and Southampton. These three ports are the three major container ports in the UK. The Port is also the major UK port for importing paper such as newsprint. The London Cruise Terminal, a one-time passenger landing stage, was reopened by the Port.
Other places of interest are the Coalhouse Fort and the Tilbury Fort, artillery forts built to guard the area against enemy attacks.
