Poulton is a civil parish and a small village in the county of Gloucestershire, England which lies 24 miles south-east of the city of Gloucester and south of the Cotswold, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Historically it was part of Wiltshire County but was an enclave of Gloucestershire for centuries. Under the Counties Detached Part Act of 1844, Poulton was transferred to Gloucestershire.
In 1337, a parish church existed in Poulton when Sir Thomas Seymour, the Lord of the Manor endowed the village with a chantry, an endowment for the saying of Masses for the dead. Seymour built the Priory of St Mary in 1348. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the priory served as the town’s parish church which was demolished in 1873. In 1873 William Butterfield built a church dedicated to St Michael and All Angels and what is now the present parish church.
