ABOUT THE AREA

Potters Bar, a Town in the English County of Hertfordshire

Potters Bar is a town in the English county of Hertfordshire located on the Great North Road, formerly the A1 but later the A1000, one of two roads from the City of London to the north of England. Although the town’s history can be traced back to the 13th century, it continued to be a small, primarily agricultural community until 1850, with the advent of the Great Northern Railway. At present, this town is part of the London commuter belt.

Where the Potter part of the town’s name came from is not entirely certain, but it is believed that it could be a reference to either a Roman pottery which was found locally or the Pottere family who are residents of the neighbouring parish, South Mimms. The Bar, on the other hand, could be a reference to the gates from the South Mimms parish leading to the Enfield Chase parish. It could have also referred to some “toll” on the Great North Road which is thought of like the Green Man pub now, or the present entryway to Morven House.

Food, Shopping and accommodation in Potters Bar

The 2,500-acre estate home of the Byng family called Wrotham Park is located within Barnet, a former urban district of Hertfordshire and Potters Bar. Still owning plenty of land in town, the Byng family had a pub named after a member of the family. The Admiral Byng Pub got its name from Admiral John Byng, who was shot dead in the Minorca for failing to follow orders.

Things to See and do in Potters Bar

Two religious temples in Potters Bar are popular destinations for visitors, the Jain Temple and the Umbanda Temple. ON the other hand, the Wyllyotts Theatre is a great venue for the performing arts and the cinema with rooms for meetings and conferences.
