ABOUT THE AREA

Wheathampstead, a Civil Parish and Village in the English County of Hertfordshire

The village of Wheathampstead is also a civil parish in Hertfordshire, England located four miles north of St Albans on the River Lea. It is also close to the Nomansland Common.

The first settlers in this area were the Belgic invaders around 50BC. Evidence of this settlement are the earthworks found in Devil’s Dyke which are remnants of an ancient Catuvellauni settlement which is believed to be the original capital of the tribe. Around 20BC, the capital was transferred to Verlamion, which is now St Albans. Some historians advanced the theory that Devil’s Dyke was part of the same defensive fortification of the Beech Bottom Dyke which is nearby. It such theory is proven correct, that would make the district one of the most important and largest Iron Age settlement in the UK.
