High Wycombe, or Simply Wycombe, a Large Town in the English County of Buckinghamshire
High Wycombe, most often called simply Wycombe, is a large town, in fact, second largest town in the English County of Buckinghamshire, second only to Milton Keynes. It is a combination of industrial and market town, with furniture production a tradition. The High Street hosts a market in this town since the Middle Ages.
The manufacture of lace and linen cloth was the earliest industry in this town. Although the paper industry was also noted in the 17th and 18th Century, it was, however, overtaken by the cloth industry. Furniture making, especially Windsor chairs, is Wycombe’s most successful industry, and it came about in the 19th Century. Information on the town’s cloth and furniture industry including samples of the locally made chair is on display at the Wycombe Museum.
