Three miles south of the market town of Richmond, in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire lies the major garrison and town of Catterick Garrison. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, and it is located on the A6136 road. This lacks a true town center, but its population is expected to grow by the year 2020. It also has the largest population center in the area today. The garrison doesn't have a railway, but the Catterick Camp railway station is serving as a terminus station on the branch line of Eryholme to Richmond.
Although the garrison and town lack a town center, it is home to a Tesco store which was its first supermarket established in the year 2000. The garrison is also home to a retail park well-known as the Richmondshire Walk. Within the area of this retail park, you will find a branch of McDonald’s, Peacocks and Poundstretcher. Directly opposite to its retail park, you will also find the Catterick Leisure Centre that houses several facilities that promote physical fitness and health.
The place was also home to one of the county’s largest cinemas, the Ritz Cinema, which closed on the year 1977. It is also home to the famous Foxglove Covert, the first local nature reserve in North Yorkshire and the first of its kind to be located on Ministry of Defense. The site covers an area of 100 acres of moorland edge it was declared to be a Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance.
