Clare, a Small Village Located on the North Shore of the River Stour in the English County of Suffolk
The small village of Clare is in the English county of Suffolk. It is located on the north shore of the River Stour in the “South and Heart” of Suffolk. It is 9 miles from Sudbury and 14 miles from Bury St Edmunds.
In the village and in the area that surrounds it, there are traces of man’s long existence all through prehistory. Historical records reveal a community that has undergone changes but prevailed over time, from the Norman Invasion through religious battles, agricultural disasters and the industrial revolution to the current times.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Clare
Clare’s pride is its independent shops, mostly housed in Grade II listed buildings assembled in the area earmarked for conservation. There are no chain stores in the village except for the Co-Op. There is also a good number of places to eat in this village ranging from fine dining to teas and homemade cakes to take aways. This small town has one hotel and several B&Bs.
Things to See and Do in Clare
The little town has a large number of historic sites and buildings for its size. One such historic site is the Castle Country Park which covers 13.2 hectares and visited yearly by an average of 200,000 people. The Ancient House Museum, as well as the Parish Church of St Peter and the Priory, are three more historic sites worth exploring. The Clare Ancient House is a beautiful medieval timber-framed building sitting beside the Church of St Peter and Paul. The priory is a religious centre and retreat, but visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and garden. Within the priory is a 14th-century house in the middle of what remained of the original abbey building.
