To the north of Sunderland, east of Newcastle and the south of South Shields in the county of Tyne and Wear is The Boldons. It is a group of three small villages namely, East, West and the Colliery. The name of this area emerged from the word “Bold” or “Botl” which means a building and the word “dun” which means a hill. Due to the sinking of the area, this area was known as Boldon which became a new town. It was formerly administered by the Urban Council of County Durham then it became part of the borough of South Tyneside.
