Within Tyne and Wear’s City of Sunderland metropolitan borough, lies the large new town of Washington. It is geographically situated at an equal distance from the city centers of Durham, Newcastle, and Sunderland and it also has close ties to all three cities. It is a designated new town in the year 1964 and it dramatically expanded due to the creation of new villages and absorption of some Chester-le-Street’s areas. This town was once heavily involved in the coal industry, and then it shifted to the chemical industry during the 19th-century.
