Mere, a Small Historic Town in Wiltshire Nestling Underneath the South Wiltshire Downs
Mere is a small historic town in Wiltshire, England. It is located on the cusp of the Salisbury Plain near the borders of Dorset and Somerset. The main features of the town are the chiming town clock, a large 15th-century parish church and an old market square. On the northwestern side of town rises the precipitous slope of Castle Hill.
To the north of the town is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that provides plenty of impressive wonders such as the White Sheet Hill Nature Reserve and strip lynchets, features of an ancient Celtic field system. Overlooking the town is the Mere Castle or Castle Hill, a medieval fortress built in 1253 by Richard the Earl of Cornwall. At present only earthworks remain of the once imposing structure.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Mere
In the town centre there are pubs, a tea room, and take away food as well as a traditional butcher. Antique retailers, greengrocers, Yapps Wines, pharmacy and other shops can also be found in the town centre. Within two miles of the town centre, accommodations are available at the Stourhead Gardens Bed & Breakfast in the middle of the Stourhead House and Garden, an estate with a Palladian mansion, gardens, woodland and farmland. Close by is Longleat which also has available rooms for visitors.

Woodland trails and open downland offers opportunities for horse riding and walking while cycle byways provide either a challenging or leisurely outing.
