Ongar, a Civil Parish in the Epping Forest District in the English County of Essex
The civil parish of Ongar is part of the Epping Forest District in the Essex County of England. It encompasses the towns of Chipping Ongar, Shelley, Greensted Green, Greensted and Marden Ash. It is a moderately advanced parish with plenty of open lands.
The name of the parish means “grassland.” It was constituted as a parish in 1965 as a consolidation of the civil parishes of Shelley, Greensted and this parish in the Epping and the Rural District. It was included in the Epping Forest District in 1974.
The parish is shaped like an inverted “L” moving from Greensted in the west then eastward to Marden Ash. Then it runs to the north to cover Chipping Ongar and Shelley. This parish is a post town in the Chelmsford postcode area.

Visitors can also take the walking tour which goes through the houses where the African explorer David Livingstone and the author of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” once lived. The North Weald Aerodrome & Museum which is accessible from this parish via the heritage railway is also worth visiting.
