Cambridge is a hamlet in the civil parish of Slimbridge in the Stroud district, Gloucestershire County, England. It sits between Gloucester and Bristol along the A38 road. Its nearest neighbours are Gloucester (11 miles) and Dursley. (3 miles).
The hamlet is named after the River Cam which runs through it. The hamlet was known to the Saxons as Cwatbriege, and it was the battlefront of a battle between the Danes and the Saxons during the time of Edward the Elder.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Cambridge
It used to have two public houses, but the White Lion closed and was converted into a private home. The only existing public house is the George Inn. From Cambridge, there is a direct bus service to Thornbury, Stroud, Gloucester and Bristol. For shopping, visitors will have to go to Slimbridge proper.
Things to See and Do in Cambridge
The area is a bird watcher and walkers’ paradise together with the Cotswold Way and the Slimbridge Wetlands. The lovely hamlet is situated very close to the Cotswold while Slimbridge Wetlands is only a short drive away. The wetlands is a wildlife reserve managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust founded by Peter Scott and has the world’s largest collection of captive wildfowl. The Sloane Observation tower on the reserve provides a sweeping view of the Cotswold, the Forest of Dean and the River Severn. Cotswold Way, on the other hand, offers almost a 100 miles of magical walking experience.
