Cinderford, a Small Town in Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England
Cinderford is a small and young town located on the eastern outskirt of the Forest of Dean in the County of Gloucestershire, England. The town was only established in the 19th Century as a result of the growth of the coal and iron industries in the area.
An indication of the town’s origin can be gleaned from its layout and style. Like many of the towns in the Wales Valley that also flourished because of coal mining, this small town too has long rows of identical terraced housing. In the 1950s and 1960s, when the coal industry went into decline, the town suffered a great deal since most of its male population are employed in the mines. At present, this town already has a mix of industries, from light to heavy.
Cinderford as a town may have been settled only in the 19th Century, but its name has already appeared on record as early as 1258. It indicates a place where there are massive deposits of cinders essential for iron making. Coal mining has been the main industry of this town for many years.
