Leigh or “The Lye”, a Village and a Small Parish in the County of Gloucestershire, England
Leigh or Lye as it is locally known is a small village and parish in Gloucestershire County located 6 miles north of Gloucester. It sits largely between the Gloucester-Tewkesbury road and the River Severn and is also 4 miles south of Tewkesbury. The village is, for the most part, low-lying and flat with a ridge running through its eastern half and the land rising at an elevation of 100 ft at Coombe Hill at the north-east corner of the village.
It is believed that the early settlers in the village came in the 12th or early 13th century when the church of Leigh was built as a chapel of Deerhurst near the moated site. Records, however, seem to indicate that End, as the settlement was referred to, did not look like a nucleated village. The larger settlement appeared to be at Evington in the 14th Century, which is half a mile north-east of the church, lying between Leigh and Deerhurst. The church was restored in 1885 and was called the Church of St Catherine.
