Kingswood, a Civil Parish and a Village in the Stroud District of the County of Gloucestershire
Kingswood is a village and civil parish in South Gloucestershire, England. It lies on the eastern border of Bristol and south-west of Wotton-under-Edge at the edge of the Cotswold. The village used to be part of Wiltshire but was integrated into Gloucestershire under the Counties Act 1844.
During the Saxon and Norman era, the area which surrounded Bristol up to Filwood in South Bristol was called the Kingswood Forest and was a royal hunting ground. The tiny hamlet of Stapleton lies at the border of the forest, to the north of the River Froom. The name Stapleton has a very Saxon root and is held to mean “The Croft, homestead or farm near or by the Stapol post or pillar.” The earliest industry in the area was coal mining.
