Stone, a Small Village in the English County of Gloucestershire
Stone is tiny village along A38 Road in the parish of Ham and Stone in Gloucestershire, England. At the 2011 census, the combined population of Stone and Ham is 711. The village lies halfway between Gloucester and Bristol, to the North Newport, and next to the county boundary with South Gloucestershire.
In the ancient times, this village was a chapelry in the parish of Berkeley, but according to the online catalogue, Gloucestershire Archives, in 1700 it was considered a parish in its own right. There is no record though when the village officially became a separate ecclesiastical parish, but since 1894 it has been in the civil parish of Ham and Stone.
Food, Shopping and Accommodation in Stone
There used to be a pub called The Berkeley Vale Public House, but it was closed down recently. So for dining out, residents and visitors will have to go to either Gloucester, Berkeley or Wotton-under-Edge.
Very close to the village is the lovely Pedington Manor, a fabulous country house for 16 to 20 guests. Aside from the manor, there is no other accommodation available in the village. The nearest hotels or B&Bs are in Berkeley and Gloucester.
Things to See and Do in Stone
The village has a Church, a village green, a village hall and a Church of England primary school. The dwellers, as well as visitors, will have to go farther afield to the neighbouring towns of Berkeley and Gloucester for more places to see and things to do.
