Essendon, a Civil Parish and Village in the County of Hertfordshire, England
The village and civil parish of Essendon, Hertfordshire, England are bounded on the north by the River Lea which crosses the village from north-west to northeast. It is 6 miles south-west of Hertford and has a lovely view of the Leah Valley to the north. At the southern border of the village, the land rises to a height of almost 400 ft above sea level and slopes down to the north, where the low-lying areas close to the river are susceptible to flooding.

The Rose and Crown at the centre of the village is a favourite restaurant and watering hole in this village. Another place for diners is the Country Club and Restaurant. Towns close to the village such as Hatfield offer a broad range of accommodation to visitors of the village. Hatfield, with its Galeria Shopping Outlet and town centre, is also the place to go for shopping.
Things to See and Do in Essendon
Considered the oldest structure in the village is the St Mary’s parish church which dates back for the most part from the 17th and 18th Centuries, although the west tower dates from the 15th Century. Another building of note is the old manor house called the Essendon Bury which is now a farmhouse located a half mile from the church.
Other historic houses in the village include the Camfield Place, once the home of English author Barbara Cartland. Then there is the Holwell Court, the Essendon Place, and the Bedwell House, a manor house which is now the clubhouse of the Country Club is another building worthy of note.
This village is such a lovely part of the county where there are plenty of places to enjoy a walk. Famous to dog walkers and ramblers is the circular path that starts and finishes at the village, passing through Bayford. The route also follows a bridle path, crosses fields and passes through the beautiful rural landscape.
