Bedford is the county town of the English county of Bedfordshire. The town was established at a ford crossing the River Great Ouse. Offa of Mercie, the Anglo-Saxon king, is believed to have been buried in this town. The town has been granted the status of a borough in 1165 and has had representation in Parliament since 1265.
