Saxmundham, a Small Market town in the River Fromus Valley in Suffolk, England
The small but charming market town of Saxmundham is located in the River Fromus valley. The town is about 5 miles west of the coast of Sizewell and 18 miles northeast of Ipswich. The East Suffolk LIne passes through this town and is served by the Railway Station. The River Fremus is a feeder of River Alde. The name of the town has been purportedly taken from the Saxon “Seizmon’s Home.”
Shopping and Accommodation in Saxmundham
The tradition of a market in this town started in 1272 AD, and it has continued to this day every Wednesday with a wide range of stalls selling all kinds of wares. It also has a diverse selection of independent retailers and a Waitrose supermarket, the only one in the area. It hosts some pubs, cafes, and restaurants, all twenty-seven of them and one hotel, twenty-seven inns/B&Bs and nine speciality lodgings such as a converted farmhouses and barns, and caravan camping/glamping parks.
Things to See and Do
This town is a great base for those who want to explore the numerous places to see and visit along the coast. The beautiful Suffolk coast is rich in wildlife such as the magnificent red deer, tiny colourful butterflies, majestic oaks, undulating sea of reeds, graceful avocets and mystical nightjars. All these can be observed in bird hides located in strategic places in the Minsmere nature reserve and the Dunwich Heath nature reserve. There is also an assortment of countryside walks where visitors can indulge in a leisurely stroll while contemplating nature. In Dunwich Heath, there are three trails available with varying views of the beautiful landscape.
Saxmundham Museum is also a must-visit destination. The museum aims to preserve the history of the towns of Benhall, Kelsale-cum-Carlton and Saxmundham.
