Newcastle International Airport (IATA: NCL, ICAO: EGNT)
Approximately five nautical miles northwest of the city center of Newcastle upon Tyne, within the civil parish of Woolsington, lies the Newcastle International Airport, NCL. It was the eleventh busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the second busiest in Northern England after Manchester Airport in 2016, handling more than 4.8 million passengers. The airport is owned by seven local authorities which own 51% and AMP Capital which owns the remaining 49%. It has a Civil Aviation Authority Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P725), allowing it to accommodate flights for the public transport of passengers or flying instructions.
The seven local authorities that own 51% of the airport are the areas including City of New Castle, City of Sunderland, Gateshead MBC, Durham County Council, Northumberland County Council, South Tyneside MBC and North Tyneside MBC.
This Airport primarily serves the city of Newcastle, most of the Tyneside Area, Wearside and Northumberland. In terms of the number of passengers, this airport is the second largest airport in the Northern part of England. However, it competes with the smaller Durham Tees Valley Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport for the passengers traveling from and to County Durham and Teesside as well as passengers traveling from Cumbria, North Yorkshire, and southern Scotland. It also competes with the larger Edinburgh and Glasgow airports to the north.
This international airport features an extended and refurbished Departure Terminal that houses a great parade of shops, cafes and newly added 1,200 waiting seats. With sophisticated and modern facilities to offer, Newcastle International Airport is an efficient and excellent complex that takes well good care of passengers, keeping them entertained and occupied.
To the south of the airport is the Newcastle Airport Freight Village as well as the offices that deals with freights such as mail and cargo to export and import goods to and from Newcastle and across the world. These offices handle the including companies; Emirates SkyCargo, FedEx, Servisair Cargo and North East Air Cargo. It also houses different Freight Forwarding Agents such as Casper Logistics Ltd, Kintetsu World Express, Kuehne & Nagel, Nippon Express, Schenker International, Davis Turner Air Cargo and Universal Forwarding.
As for the airport’s other facilities, Newcastle International Airport is home to Newcastle Airport Fire Academy. It also houses the Newcastle Aviation Academy and also to the south of the main complex are bases for the Great North Air Ambulance and the NPAS Newcastle Helicopter. The area also has maintenance workshops and various depots that caters to needs of the facility.
