Broxbourne, a Commuter Town in the Borough of Broxbourne in the English County of Hertfordshire
The commuter town of Broxbourne belongs to the Broxbourne borough of the Hertfordshire County in the East of England. It lies a mile south of Hoddesdon and north of Wormley and 17.1 miles north-northeast of Charing Cross in London. It also lies close to the River Lea which serves as the boundary with Essex. Broxbourne Woods, a National Nature Reserve, is found west of the town.
Sand and gravel were extracted from the area in the 20th Century. But this exploitation of the land stopped when the mineral reserve was depleted in the late 1960s leaving behind water filled lakes. Some of these lakes form part of the Lee Valley Regional Park.
Food, Shopping and accommodation in Broxbourne
This commuter town has two distinctive town centres; Waltham Cross and Hoddesdon. Hoddesdon is a pretty little market town with an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes and shops. It has several charming historical features and a busy market on Fridays and Wednesdays. Waltham Cross, on the other hand, is a bustling commercial centre with a pedestrianised high street. It has an interesting mix of shops and a market also on Fridays and Wednesdays.
There is one hotel, two B&Bs/inns and one campsite in town. For wider choices, there are numerous hotels in the neighbouring town of St Albans and Cheshunt.
Things to See and Do in Broxbourne
The Paradise Wildlife Park is one of the town’s local attractions and the most visited tourist destination in Hertfordshire. Here you get to meet tigers, lions and meerkats and gain an entirely enjoyable experience of interacting with wild animals. Cruising along River Lee on a boat rental and exploring a woodland sculpture trail are favourite activities of tourists in this town.
