The small market town of Buntingford is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district in the English county of Hertfordshire which has earned the distinction as the smallest town in the county. It is located along a major Roman Road called Ermine Street and the banks of the River Rib. Because of its strategic location, it developed as a staging post with several coaching inns. It even has an 18th Century one-cell prison called “The Cage” located in the Ford at the end of Church Street.
The latest addition to the town's development is the Bovis Estate, named after the company that initiated its construction. The main road of the Estate is called Luynes Rise; the name is a reminder of Buntingford twin city, Luynes, France. Other housing developments in the village are; Freman Drive, Snells Mead, Vicarage Road, Downhall Ley, Kingfisher Park and Monk's Walk.
