Royal Leamington Spa, Also Called Leam, Leamington or Leamington Spa is a Spa Town in the English County of Warwickshire
The spa town of Royal Leamington Spa, also known as Leam, Leamington or Leamington Spa by the locals is in the Warwickshire County of England. The town boasts of an excellent collection of Regency architecture especially in some section of the Parade, Lansdowne Circus and Clarendon Square.
How Royal Leamington Spa Got its Name
The town got its name from the River Leam which runs through the town. In the 19th Century, the town experienced an unprecedented expansion when the medicinal value of its water became well known.
The town was once called Leamington Prior, and it began to grow as a town beginning the 19th Century. The Domesday Book of 1086 referred to it as Lamintone. Kenilworth Priory had the control of the settlement in the area for 400 years, and this was where the suffix “Priors” came from. The name Leamington was derived from the Anglo-Saxon Lemen-tun or Leman-tun which means “farm on the River Leam.” Even during the Roman era, the benefits of the spa water had been established. But it was not until it was rediscovered by Benjamin Satchwell and William Abbotts that commercialisation began. The original spring of the Aylesford Well sprang up naturally. The other six wells were drilled.
