The civil parish and village of Wishaw is within the North Warwickshire district in the English County of Warwickshire. It is located approximately 1 mile north of Curdworth and around 3 miles east of Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands.
The village was first listed as Witscaga from the Anglo-Saxon name whit sceaga which means “curved thicket +small wood” maybe because Wishaw occupies a higher ground. In the 1086 Domesday Book, the village was listed as a small manor held by an Anglo-Saxon manorial lord named Ordric who went on to hold the manor even after the Conquest.
Things to See and Do in Wisham
The beautiful church dedicated to St Chad, a 7th Century Anglo-Saxon churchman, is located in Wishaw. The church is famous for weddings and regular Sunday services, although the parish has a very small population. The present building of the church was built in the 13th Century; It is a charming red sandstone medieval building in the middle of the fields close to the De Vere Belfry.
The Wishaw Country Sports, a venue for various exhilarating activities such as shooting, tractor driving and blindfold driving is also in this town. The venue also has a converted farm building which serves as a luxury event setting for functions such as weddings, birthdays and the like.
It’s claim to fame is the Belfry golf resort, host to the Ryder Cup on four occasions. The Belfry is located in what was once the Moxhull Park, the beautiful, impressive home of the Ryland family which mysteriously went up in flames in the early 20th Century. The manor house which is now the Moxhull Hall was rebuilt a mile away from the original location.
